BUILD: Most parts are machined aircraft aluminum and stronger and lighter than cast components. This 90mm tall head has an attractive satin (semi-gloss) enamel and appears durable. Without a plate, it weighs 395g, slightly heavier than the similar sized SIRUI G-20X (320g). The base is 68mm in diameter and tapped for a 3/8 inch tripod mount thread.
CONTROLS: The larger the ball the smoother the roll and the finer the control, and this 38mm ball is extra jumbo for a small head. Operation is simplicity incarnated: a single large knob controls drag and lock. Ball action is liquid smooth but locks tight with my EOS 6D and EF 70-200 4L IS USM, even at a steep angle in the drop slot. The K-20X also has an independent panning function with lock knob. Action is smooth but highly dampened. Definitely designed for carefully positioning for stills and not for action or video panning.
CLAMP: The 55mm Arca-compatible clamp sports silky knob action and safety pin with push button release. The pin lodges in the bottom of milled out plates, preventing the works from siding out if you neglect to tighten down. The spring loaded pin retracts if your plate isn't milled. It's a simple but effective safety feature. Unfortunately, this clamp is incompatible with safety stop screws on small plates--60mm or less--due to a lack of grooves on the clamp's top. The workaround is to remove the safety stop screws. Safety stop screws on larger plates works fine but, of course, must be top loaded. My 90mm long RRS L-plate is fine since screws have plenty of clearance on both sides of the clamp.
The bubble level on the side of the clamp is larger than most head levels and handy if you shoot panoramic photos: level the tripod with the ball, mount a nodal plate and pan clamp topside and you're ready to go.
PLATE COMPATIBILITY: All of my Arca compatible plates--RRS, Sunwayfoto, CamAdapter, Promedia and Kirk--can top load and tighten down securely. My 140mm Neewer nodal plate also fits perfectly. As mentioned above, safety stop screws on smaller plates need to be removed. The included universal plate, while of decent quality, lacks a hand strap loop or anti-twist flange, so I suspect most buyers will prefer a fitted or dedicated plate on their camera or lens foot.
USING THE K-20X: With a little practice, I could easily top load the clamp by feel in the dark: open clamp, sit camera with plate in the slot and tighten. The mounting process takes 5 or 6 seconds. I wish the clamp knob were a little larger but the ribbed rubber makes for a sure grip. Fast free form head adjustments were also a snap: loosen the tension knob while looking through the viewfinder, move it any direction and lock when satisfied with the composition. I found the K-20X/T-1205X combo ideal for hiking, travel and shooting waterfalls and coastal waves with my 6D MKII and 24-105 4L IS USM or EF 70-200 4L IS USM. One to 30 second exposures were pin sharp.
LAST BLUB: All in all a well designed lightweight ball head: excellent fit and finish, smooth operation, rock steady and reasonable price. Paired with a SIRUI T-1205X tripod, it becomes a kickin' travel and hiking combo: light, compact and easily slips into a carry-on.

Let’s jump ahead to some of the features, now I would not particularly consider this a “feature” but I am really fond of the overall smoothness of this BH. Everything from the dialing nobs to the articulating rotation of the actual BH is buttery smooth. The large nob contains numerical adjustable friction and a quick locking mechanism screw locking in the dial. What is cool about this once you have adjusted the dial to your liking, you can lock in the tension preventing it from ever budging. The Sirui K-40X has a 125mm expandable Arca Swiss quick- release plate style platform suitable for a variety of quick-release plates. Included on the quick-release plate platform is two bubble levels vertical and horizontal this is perfect for optimal composition, and balancing. Also included on the plate is a red safety button preventing your base plate from sliding off, I find this feature to be very useful because I didn't have this on my last ball head. Although it has never happened I was always concerned about my camera accidentally sliding off hitting the floor, and that would just be tragic so I was in need of a feature such as this.
My impression of the Siuri K-40X it is an absolute winner, this BH is the epitome of professional ingenuity. The overall build quality smoothness of this ball head excites my expectations in performance. As I mentioned in the introduction it is crafted to perfection and virtually indestructible. Aside from the awesome features it packs such as the quick locking pin, 125mm Arca Swiss style quick release plate, two bubble levels and the red safety button. Coming in at a fraction of the cost in comparison to its counter parts, I am sure you will find this ball head a bargain. It is well packaged coming with instruction, extra quarter inch small screw for the “QR” plate, an Allen key, labeled soft pouch, generally you will only see this in your higher end ball heads, and last but not lease a 6 year Warranty you heard that right!. Paired with my Gitzo G-2220 they offer the ideal support, balance and stability.
It's very smooth to operate. The other heads that I have operate in such a rough way that it can take time to get the exact adjustment that you need. This one just glides along then you just twist the knob and it's set. It comes with excellent instructions on how to set it up. First you adjust the amount of tension you want to have as you move the camera around. This can vary depending on camera weight and balance with lens. Then you set the stop so that it won't get any looser than what you just set it. Move your camera around and give it a simple twist and you're all set.
Panning works fine as well. It doesn't click but it is marked so that you can easily move form one point to the next and again a simple twist and it's locked.
The quick release works well, too. Simply bolt it to the bottom of your camera (be sure it's good and tight), slide it onto the head and tighten it up.
The biggest question is how long will it last? It comes with a six year warranty so I should get plenty of use of out it!
One day I will splurge for a better and lighter tripod but for now it works very well on my Manfrotto.
It looks great, works great and the price is great! You can't go wrong!
Top reviews from other countries
the quality is great and It can easily stand beside manfrotto. it does not rattle or shake when using. it has a panorama lock and tension knob.
tested it with d810 and tamron 15-30 which are my hevaiest combination with over 2kg! it surprisingly handled it very well without any problem.
highly recommend it over manfrotto heads and their stupid quick release system!
